If you’re like most people when you first start your Internet home business, you have a limited budget and are looking to get started with a minimal investment. In trying to cut corners wherever you can, you may be tempted to use free services to help you get going in your new business.

The problem is that this approach could end up costing more money than what it saves you.

If you are starting your business using a free e-mail account such as Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail you may be projecting the wrong image.

One big problem with free email services is that they are often used by spammers and other less then reputable online marketers. In addition to the risk of appearing unprofessional to your potential customers, these mail servers are forced to strictly filter incoming email and there’s a greater chance that your legitimate incoming email will be mistakenly discarded as spam.

The other main problem with using free accounts is that you lose a golden opportunity to brand yourself… to make you and your product stand out. If you are a serious Internet marketer you will need your own website anyway. A meaningful domain name is the first step in establishing your online presence.

Another mistake sometimes made by new Internet marketers is to continue to use a personal identity for online business. If you’re known online as “pookie” or “bill’s babe,” or even if you’ve posted about your personal life under a more generic name, you’ll be more successful if you establish a new business identity for yourself.

A professional online business identity is not a big investment. A domain name costs less that $10 and you can find reliable hosting for just a few dollars a month. How can you expect others to take you seriously if don’t invest a few dollars into your business?

It may not be the most important step you’ll take towards online success, branding yourself with a great domain name will improve your Internet marketing results.
