Blog Themes Aren’t Just About Looks

Posted by Linda Stacy in 2009

You may have realized this long before I did. Blog themes aren’t just about layout and design. Now even many free themes come with some cool functionality and features. And if you’re willing to spend a little you can find some amazing features included in some really nice designs.

I guess the whole concept of themes including functional features sort of snuck up on me. In the nearly five years that I’ve been blogging I’ve changed themes several times to change the look of the Business Opportunity Connection. This new theme is the first time I’ve gone looking for some functions I wanted, including the featured section at the top and the tabbed section in the sidebar that contains “Popular,” “Comments,” etc. I’m sure with a little know-how or research those elements can be added to almost any theme, but it’s great to find them bundled together and ready to go.

I modified the theme a bit to make it more my style and move some things around. For continuity I kept the same header graphic and some of the same colors. The big difference is the magazine style home page, which may take a little while to get used to.

Please leave a comment to let me know what you think. How often do you change the look of your blog? Is it more about design or more about functionality for you?

Spotlight on PartyLite – Candles and Gifts Direct Sales

Posted by Linda Stacy in 2009

Candles and Gifts Direct SalesPartyLite is probably best known as a candle direct sales company, but their product line includes gifts, home accents, bath and body care, and more. And they’ve expanded further with the parent company’s recent acquisition of Two Sister’s Gourmet.

The company is well-established and has a reputation for quality products. The consultant opportunity became available just over 35 years ago, but the company got it’s start in the early 1900′s when Mabel Baker started making candles.

To learn more about this candle and gift home business opportunity, visit the PartyLite company page in the InternetBasedMoms.com direct sales directory.

Free Private Label Rights (PLR) Content

Posted by Linda Stacy in 2009

It’s can be difficult to find high quality free private label rights content, but the Niche Audio Club is an exception. It’s is a newer private label rights membership site that offers both a free and paid option.

Resource or related articleClick here to check out the free membership.

I’ve been a free member for just a couple of months, but I’m quite impressed with the quality of the material that’s available to me. The first couple of subjects aren’t in my niche so I haven’t used those ebooks, but they would be suitable for some direct sales categories.

Each free product comes with a professional sales letter and graphics, so if the ebook suits you as is, you can have your sales site set up very quickly. The ebooks can also be modified to better suit your needs.

The paid upgrade includes an audio recording of the monthly content and additional marketing material including articles and email ads. When I initially joined I had hoped there was on option to just purchase individual product upgrades, but that’s not the case. The upgrade is a monthly membership and once you cancel it, you can’t rejoin. But I do appreciate the free membership because it gave me a chance to evaluate the quality and usefulness of the material before joining.

As with most free membership sites, Niche Audio Club materials say that there won’t always be a free option. So have a look at it today, and secure your
free membership as soon as you can. A refund can be requested for the first month’s fee.

Spotlight on Scentsy – Flameless Candles Direct Sales

Posted by Linda Stacy in 2009

Candle Direct SalesScentsy consultants market a unique product line in the popular direct sales category of candle sales. The company offers wickless, flameless candles in a variety of fragrances.

According to the National Candle Association, retail sales of candles in the U.S. is about $2 billion a year and 7 out of 10 households use candles. Scentsy’s wickless candles appeal to the segment of that market that loves candles, but doesn’t like to burn them.

Home Marketing Parties, Not Sales Parties

Posted by Linda Stacy in 2009

Home PartyI came across this company today that organizes marketing events for big name national brands. The events are parties that are hosted in private homes across the United States, all on the same day, and apparently they attract thousands of hosts and tens of thousands of guests.

These are clearly marketing parties – products and services are not sold during the party. Some of the goals of the parties include brand awareness, word of mouth advertising, and attracting new customers. Additionally, sponsors collect guests’ demographics and contact information.

Guests are treated to movie and TV show previews, get to try out new products, or can help a charitable cause.

The company name and link can be found at the bottom of this post, but before you rush off to learn more about them, let me get to the point of why I’m writing about them.

Reading about the company had me wondering whether consultants should consider something like this as an alternative to the direct sales home party. If your market has become hesitant to host sales parties or hostesses are having trouble getting guests to participate, it’s time for an alternative approach. People might be more open to a party that offers a makeover and free samples, or a look at a new product line and some coupons for future purchases, but promises no sales presentation and doesn’t offer anything for sale at the party.

From the consultant’s prospective a marketing party is similar to an advertising campaign that produces returns a week or month down the road…. an investment in future sales.

Have you ever presented any type of direct sales party other than the traditional sales party? Or do you think you would consider offering something like a marketing party? Please leave a comment with your thoughts.

The company that organizes the marketing parties for brand name companies is called House Party™ and can be found at HouseParty.com.

Little Entrepreneurs – Starting them Young and Creating Good Habits for Life
Written by Annette Yen

I’ve been working from home since my youngest daughter was born. It’s been a great adventure and I’m so blessed to be able to stay home with my kids and bring some income to the family budget. I love it.

The key to making this work for our family has been having our daughters work with me in my businesses from the beginning. Now I know, that sounds impossible. And obviously a newborn can’t stick labels on my mailing etc. But as soon as my kids could walk and talk I started training them to be little entrepreneurs and helpers, beginning first with helping me around the house so that I could get the business work done.

Here are a few quick steps you can take with your little ones to start them on the road to success in helping you with your business and even toward helping them get their own home business started when they’re older.

1. While they’re still in your arms, use a sling or a backpack to carry baby with you while you work. Talk about what you’re doing and how they can help you when they’re older. The key at this age is have them WITH you as much as possible and then use nap time to get those things done that might be impossible to do with a young one strapped to you.

2. When your little ones can walk, have them help you with some simple tasks…filling up the dog food, folding washcloths, snapping beans. Always talk about how much help they are to you and how much you’ll love it when they’re ready to do this job all by themselves. Before you know it they’ll be saying, “I can do it mom!”

3. Praise them often for their efforts. They may not put the fork on the right side of the plate but it’s there and it helped. Let them know it! Make simple jobs easy for them. Put items in drawers that they can reach. For instance, a two or three year old can easily set the table with silverware, but it would really help them if they had a placemat to tell them where each piece goes and if the flatware was in a drawer at their level. You can easily make a vinyl placemat a silverware map with a sharpie. Just draw each piece on there and use the placemats at every meal letting your child set the table.

4. Let them work the business with you. In the beginning that might just be having them sit in the high chair or booster seat at the table while you work the computer and they put paperclips in Dixie cups. Or buy some tape and construction paper and have them tape away … it’s cheap and you’re using items that they’ll be using in the future to really help you with your business. As soon as they’re ready, have them put the stickers and postage stamps on your mailings, strap the packing tape on your boxes (it doesn’t have to be perfect!) sort and/or file your papers, etc. Again, the key when they’re young is working with them and encouraging them.

5. Let them work independently when they’re ready. Kids are often ready to take on bigger responsibilities before you think they are. A 10 year old can easily handle the checkbook and just imagine how great it will be for his math skills too – plus the bank checks his work!

Involve your young kids in your business from the beginning. You’ll be amazed at how the investment of time (and maybe some frustration) in the early days will pay off greatly down the road when your children can handle huge parts of your business without you because they’ve been well trained.

The Importance of Good Content

Posted by Linda Stacy in 2009

Quality content is increasingly important to online success. As Internet users become more and more savvy, they are quick to judge and even quicker to click away from websites that don’t address their needs and wants. Web pages full of links and ad, and devoid of information, not only turn away visitors, but popular search engines are now using sophisticated programs to week out such sites.

Good content helps your site get to the top of Internet searches and it’s important to help make you money once people get to your website. Visitors figure if your website isn’t high quality, neither is anything they can find there. Quality content helps them stick around longer and helps builds trust in the quality of your site and products and services.

Quality content is also important for getting links to your site. You can submit your content to article archives and when other webmasters use your content it includes a link to your site. This raises your search engine rankings. Quality content also gets people talking about you, whether it’s on blogs and on social media.

So, what is good content? Continue Reading
