One of the most important components of a successful business is great copy. And for many work at home business owners, it’s one of the most difficult skills to master. Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether to write your own copy or hire a copywriter.
The term “copy” refers to the writing on your website, ads, and other promotional materials that lures customers in and “closes the sale.” The copy needs to be intriguing and persuasive enough to make the customer purchase the product, but not so “pushy” as to turn away potential customers.
There are definitely some positive aspects of writing your own copy. First of all, it is cheaper to do things yourself versus hiring someone. Another plus is that you know your product inside and out and a big part of writing good copy is explaining what your product can do for the customer. Since you know your product so well you’ll have no problem explaining the benefits your product can give to someone.
Of course, there are downsides to writing your own copy. First of all, it is difficult. Writing from a sales’ perspective takes skill. A good copywriter can explain the benefits of your product and make the reader feel as though they cannot live without the product. They can write a call to action that motivates the reader into becoming a customer. A good copywriter has the experience and skill to turn your website or other promotional material into a profitable sales’ generator.
Good copywriters can be hard to find, and they can be expensive. However, when you look at how many more sales you can receive from good copy, hiring a good copywriter is more than affordable.
You can find a copywriter by asking other home business owners for referrals. Find someone who has sales material in a style you like, and ask them if they hired a copywriter to complete the job.
Another idea is to post your job opening on a site such as elance.com or guru.com. The members of these sites are all freelancers, and a good majority are writers. They can respond back to you with a quote of how much they would charge. Posting a job opening on these sites is free of charge, and you are under no obligation to hire anyone.
The importance of having good copy cannot be stressed enough. If you feel you are a good writer and can take on the task, go for it. You may want to ask other home business owners that you network with what their opinion of your copy is just to make sure it goes over as well as you think it will. However, if you would rather not deal with the headache yourself, you can always hire a great copywriter who can get the job done for you.
Side Note: As you know, we have recommended several sources for private label and free content for your websites and mailing lists. But even if you use those sources, you still need original content for your sites. Your online content should be a good mix of content sources and you’ll need to decide whether to write that content yourself or hire someone else to do it.
