While it’s an older article, TodaysParent.com’s report on four well-known direct sales companies is still very relevant. “Seller Beware” compares two consultant stories for each company…. one success story and one example of what can go wrong.
While the article’s intent seems to be a warning about the downside, for me, the consultant stories clearly illustrate the dos and don’ts of a successful home party plan business.
For example, in the Discover Toys segment, Suzanne says, “I called everybody I knew and told them I had a goal…… They could help me either by booking a party or joining my team,” while Mary reported, “The cold calls were brutal.” Suzanne’s business grew to net about $40,000 a year, while Mary gave up in her second year.
Suzanne’s approach clearly demonstrates the basis of successful network marketing. She asked her family and friends for help to get her started. People close to you will rarely refuse to help you.
On the other hand, Mary tried approaching strangers and felt like she has to “push” or “convince” them to have a party. Most of us would not feel comfortable thinking of ourselves as a pushy sales person.
Each pair of stories in the article shows how the right attitude and a bit aptitude can make all the difference.
