I came across a discussion about health insurance benefits on a popular message board. A member had asked if any direct sales companies offered health benefits to consultants and received a number of “yes” replies.
Be careful to fully investigate what is actually offered if health insurance a major consideration for you in choosing a company.
One of the first people to reply stated that her company offers benefits. What her company offers is not insurance. The company markets a medical discount program and the benefit is available to brokers. Of course if you have no other benefits, discounted services would be worthwhile. Before signing up make sure to compare prices in your area with and without the discount, and make sure that you are willing to use the providers that are available in your area.
Some companies offer the opportunity to purchase health insurance through a group policy, which should be substantially less expensive than purchasing an individual policy. Some of the companies mentioned are Home and Garden Party, Mia Bella Candles, Shaklee, Avon, Country Bunny Bath & Body, and Discovery Toys. There may be others.
Additionally, consultants may have access to group plans through the Direct Selling Women’s Alliance, your local Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of the Self Employed, and the Direct Selling Association.
If you’re leaving a job with benefits, be sure to find out if you can continue on your current policy if you pay for it yourself. In some states companies are required to provide that option.
Remember, health insurance is usually a benefit proviced to employees of a company. Consultants for direct sales companies are independent contractors and therefore don’t receive employee benefits. Access to a group plan through your company may be an excellent option. But like anything else, make sure you explore all your options to get the coverage you need at the best price you can find.
